Growing Georgian is a food procurement initiative that looks to assist students with sustainable and nutritious food alternatives, while promoting conscious consumption, ethical growing practices, and the resurgence of the local food economy.
Growing Georgian will provide students on campuses across Ontario with access to healthy, nutritious perishable foods alongside the traditional Food Bank non-perishable foods. Our team would like to see Growing Georgian become an institutionalized system across Ontario for all campuses that encompasses a toolbox of community support, funding opportunities, marketing support, and a how-to on creating an on campus garden.
Below is a recent community news that was sent out around Barrie after our May 24th Official Garden Launch on the Georgian College Barrie campus:
Growing Georgian, piloted at the Georgian College Barrie campus promotes sustainable and nutritious
food alternatives, conscious consumption, ethical growing practices, and the resurgence of the local
food economy; all while providing food aid for the Georgian College student community.
Eventually, we would like to see Growing Georgian become an institutionalized initiative at all
campuses across Ontario. Rather than Growing Georgian, each campus within the Growing Forward umbrella will have Growing _____, for example, Growing Seneca; Growing Durham, etc.
Our milestones for Growing Georgian is the following:
May 24, 2017- Creation of first Growing Forward garden at the Georgian College Barrie Campus entitled Growing Georgian.
Total Cost- $8500 for equipment, aesthetics, soil, bone meal, volunteer apparel, etc.
June-July 2017- Promotion of Growing Forward at community events such as the Barrie Farmers Market, National Student Food Summit, and cross promoting our current partners Busch Systems, Barrie Garden Center, Home Depot, Georgian College Students' Association, and more.
Total Cost- $1500 for Facebook Ads and attendance at events
